An estate refers to the assets that a deceased person leaves behind – this includes money, real estate, investments, or other assets. An estate can be fully or partially bequeathed to a charitable cause by will, for example through a legacy gift or the establishment of a foundation.

Example: A person stipulates in their will that 20% of their assets should go to a charitable foundation for the promotion of education.
