The Problem: Climate change and planetary boundaries
The figures are clear: climate change is the greatest threat currently facing our planet. The IPCC Report 2023 has once again made it clear that we are on a dangerous course.
According to information from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, six of the nine planetary boundaries had already been crossed in 2023. And in the year 2024, warming of more than 1.5 degrees was measured over a full one-year period for the first time (cf. Federal Environment Agency 2025).
This means that we must take global action to limit temperature rise and prevent catastrophic destruction of nature and habitats.
A few facts at a glance:
📌 CO2 emissions from fossil fuels continue to be the main driver of climate change.
📌 Climate change not only impacts the environment, but also human health, the economy, and biodiversity.
📌 If we do nothing, we are expected to exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius mark by 2030 – with dramatic consequences for our planet.
👉 The question many of us repeatedly ask ourselves is: What can we do to prevent this?
Solutions: How we can fight climate change
The good news: there is already a wide range of solutions actively working in the fight against climate change. Political initiatives like the COP negotiations play an important role, but individuals and organizations are also implementing concrete measures today to reduce CO2 emissions and create a sustainable future. Various approaches to solutions, from innovative technologies to practical climate protection projects, are crucial to managing the climate crisis. Below, we have listed some of them that you should know:
🍃 CO2 Emission Rights:
CO2 emission rights are a market-based instrument for reducing CO2 emissions. They set a limit on the amount of CO2 that can be emitted by companies and countries. Companies that keep their emissions below the set limit can sell their surplus rights, motivating them to improve their production and processes to save CO2. These measures help limit the total amount of CO2 emissions and use market mechanisms to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
🍃 Carbon Capture and CO2 Removal:
One of the most promising technologies in the fight against climate change is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, which filters CO2 directly from the air or industrial emissions and stores it underground. This technology can help reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere by binding CO2 that would otherwise be released into the air. Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies, which suck CO2 directly out of the ambient air, are also on the rise. These innovations offer promising solutions to achieve climate goals.
🍃 Reduction of CO2 Emissions:
The direct reduction of CO2 emissions is the cornerstone of any climate protection strategy. This includes promoting renewable energies such as solar and wind power, expanding electric mobility, and improving energy efficiency in buildings and industry. The transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources is crucial to lowering CO2 emissions in the long term and limiting global warming.
🍃 Climate Adaptation Measures:
Climate change is already in full swing, and many regions are already affected by extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and storms. Climate adaptation measures are necessary to respond to these changes. These include building protective management systems against natural disasters, redesigning cities to make them more resilient to extreme weather events, and protecting water resources. Reforesting forests to act as CO2 sinks also plays an important role in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
🍃 Nature-Based Solutions:
The biodiversity crisis goes hand in hand with climate change, and the loss of natural habitats exacerbates the situation. Nature-based solutions such as reforestation projects, wetland restoration, and forest protection contribute to binding CO2, promoting biodiversity, and conserving natural resources. These measures are beneficial not only for the climate but also for the health of the ecosystems on which we all depend.
➡️ Each of these solutions plays an important role in the fight against climate change, and every measure helps preserve the Earth to be liveable for future generations. Whether through political solutions, technological innovations, or practical adaptation measures – we have the opportunity to shape the future. And you can help!
Effective organizations in the fight against climate change
If you want to take action for climate protection, there are many organizations active at various levels. Here we introduce a few that make a direct contribution to fighting climate change and use your donation for climate protection in a meaningful way:
✨ 1. ForTomorrow
ForTomorrow offers an innovative way to offset CO2 emissions that we cannot yet avoid. With high-quality climate protection projects in Europe, ForTomorrow actively contributes to reducing and long-term binding of CO2 emissions. By buying and retiring EU emission rights, the economy is forced to emit less CO2 – one of the most effective methods to sustainably reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, ForTomorrow is involved in its own reforestation projects in Germany, which are protected by the German Federal Forest Act of 1975.
ForTomorrow was founded by Ruth von Heusinger, a graduate physicist who previously worked in renewable energy and emission trading at Statkraft, as well as in the voluntary CO2 offsetting market at atmosfair. After missing the opportunity to offset through climate protection measures in Europe, she founded the non-profit GmbH ForTomorrow in December 2019.
✨ 2. Cemune
CEMUNE was founded by Dr. Kai Monheim, based on his doctoral thesis which examined the reasons for the failure of the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference. He recognized that the complexity of the negotiations and the lack of support for the negotiators hindered progress. Therefore, he founded CEMUNE, an impartial organization of experts dedicated to supporting decision-makers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and advice to achieve transformative global sustainability agreements.
CEMUNE works closely with businesses and other stakeholders to translate these agreements into concrete actions at the local level. The organization is praised by leaders for its professionalism, inclusiveness, and its conviction that cooperation is not only the most effective strategy to address the world's urgent environmental problems, but our only option. CEMUNE is committed to advancing climate protection through deep cooperation and practice-oriented solutions.
✨ 3. Future Cleantech Architects
Future Cleantech Architects addresses the goal of closing remaining innovation gaps to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The organization accelerates innovation in key sectors such as cement, aviation, or shipping, where sustainable solutions are still in their infancy. It calls on political decision-makers to intensity and better prioritize their research and development activities. In addition, Future Cleantech Architects initiates and drives high-level research consortia on critical technologies in these often neglected technology sectors.
More than 50% of the technological innovations required to reach the net-zero emissions goal by 2050 have yet to be developed. Since cleantech innovations go through challenging development phases and large-scale deployment requires a lot of lead time, starting development now is crucial. Future Cleantech Architects tackles the most difficult problems by driving research and development in areas where decarbonization faces the biggest hurdles.
With a clear focus on scaling, the organization pursues research and development areas with the highest potential for emission reduction and tests its assumptions for scaling technologies directly on site. Its approach is hands-on and geared toward bringing solutions to implementation quickly.

✨ 4. We Want MOOR
WE WANT MOOR is dedicated to the vital task of saving the remaining moors and strengthening climate protection through their restoration. Moores make up only 3% of the world's land area but store twice as much CO2 as all the world's forests combined. In a functioning state, moors act as effective CO2 sinks. However, if they are destroyed or drained – as is the case with 95% of the original moorland in Germany – they release large amounts of CO2 and contribute to global warming.
The WE WANT MOOR e. V. advocates for the protection and restoration of these valuable ecosystems in Germany. If the moorland here were restored, they could absorb and permanently bind the entire CO2 emissions of global aviation. In addition, moors provide habitat and protection for rare animals and plants. The destruction of these habitats means that numerous species are threatened with extinction. The association fights to preserve and restore these natural CO2 sinks and to protect biodiversity in moot areas.
✨ 5. BaumEntscheid
BaumEntscheid is a broad movement from all political camps, social classes, and age groups advocating for a climate-friendly and weather-proof city of Berlin. Behind it is a rapidly growing team of dozens of volunteers, including lawyers and experts in the field of urban planning. Their goal is to finally take effective measures against increasing global warming in the capital through the Berlin referendum on the Climate Adaptation Act.
The Berlin Climate Adaptation Act includes key points such as preserving and replanting trees, expanding green spaces, and measures to prevent heat deaths. In doing so, BaumEntscheid relies on a strategic approach: starting first where it is already hottest in the city today.
The BaumEntscheid was launched in August 2023 by Génica Schäfgen, Managing Director of Ecosia Germany and trustee of Berlin Klimaneutral 2030, and Heinrich Strößenreuther, climate lobbyist and co-founder of Changing Cities and GermanZero. Both founders bring years of experience and commitment in the field of climate and environmental protection to shape a sustainable and climate-friendly change together with the people of Berlin.
✨ 6. The Generation Forest
The Generation Forest offers a sustainable, nature-based solution in the fight against global warming – generation forests. Amidst the climate and biodiversity crisis, the organization focuses on the reforestation of tropical forests in Panama, which not only remove CO2 from the atmosphere but also create new habitat for animals and plants. This contributes crucially to combating global deforestation.
As a social enterprise, The Generation Forest pursues the goal of planting and maintaining CO2-absorbing, biodiverse, and productive mixed forests in the long term. With the Generation Forest principle, the organization relies on resilient, permanent forests that promote natural regeneration. By building these forests, they prove that a balance between ecology and economic efficiency is possible and that this simultaneously represents an effective strategy for combating climate change.
The sustainable management of these generation forests is based on a holistic approach. These tropical forests act as a dynamic and versatile ecosystem that continuously regenerates and restores nature. The long-term reduction of CO2 emissions, the promotion of biodiversity, and species protection are just some of the positive effects that these forests achieve. Through scientifically sound use of natural processes, the efficiency of forestry is sustainably improved to effectively fight climate change.
💡 As a cooperative, The Generation Forest does not accept donations. To support their mission, you can purchase a cooperative share via their website. On bcause, you can still support Generation Forest with a donation - unlike buying your own cooperative share, even with a small amount. Because bcause pools the contributions of all bcause members - and thus acquires the important cooperative shares with which the generation forests are financed.

✨ 7. Planet A Ventures
Planet A is the first European Venture Capital (VC) fund to integrate scientific impact assessments into its investment decisions. An in-house science team performs life-cycle analyses to quantify the actual impact of a startup and help founders manage and improve their impact. This team has the veto power to reject investments if no significant and quantifiable positive impact can be proven.
The fund works with European green-tech startups that have a significant positive impact on the planet while building globally scalable businesses. Planet A's mission is to contribute to an economy that works within planetary boundaries. The fund supports innovations in four key areas: climate protection, waste reduction, resource conservation, and biodiversity protection.
Unlike ESG funds, which aim to limit negative impacts and financial risks, Planet A invests exclusively in companies that can prove a positive, measurable impact on at least one of these four areas – while developing a scalable business model.
💡 You can also support Planet A via bcause with your donation - without minimum amounts and contracts normally required with participation in a venture fund. How it works: You make a donation into your foundation account at bcause and receive a donation receipt from the bcause Treuhandstiftung. Here, too, bcause pools the contributions of all members and uses them to invest in the fund. The interest?
